Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) and Gokavi Transverse Technique (GTT) are forms of Dry Needling. They are acupuncture based treatments but should not be confused with Traditional Acupuncture. The techniques were developed to assist in the treatment of both acute and chronic pain resulting from myofacial trigger points. Myofacial trigger points can be found throughout the body and result in local areas of pain, stiffness and discomfort. They can arise from repetitive work actions, sporting injuries, car accidents and prolonged sustain postures (i.e. excessive computer work or driving).
When performing the technique the Physiotherapist will utilize an acupuncture needle and a stainless steel device to guide the needle to the appropriate area. Typically this will cause a small twitch in the muscle fibre and subsequent "release" of the tension in that particular muscle fibre. The procedure is repeated until the Physiotherapist feels the trigger points have been released.
